A true educator, Cicely Barber began her professional career as a first grade teacher in Atlanta’s inner -city school system. Cicely’s drive to achieve led her to enroll in law school, so she returned to her home state of Michigan to attend Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Cicely has been licensed to practice law since 2000.
Cicely spent the first part of her legal career working for the government as a staff attorney to the Chief Judge of the largest trial court in Georgia. In her tenure as staff attorney, Cicely gained extensive litigation experience by managing the judge’s civil case docket, which consisted of hundreds of cases. She has observed countless trials and other court proceedings in simple personal injury cases to multi-million dollar wrongful death, medical malpractice, and product liability cases. Additionally, Cicely helped negotiate settlement agreements in several complex cases involving multiple attorneys. Her tenure as a staff attorney has given Cicely a certain knowledge and expertise of civil litigation and practical litigation procedures that few attorneys possess.
Today Cicely blends her passion for teaching with her law degree by providing practical legal training to legal professionals through her company, Litigation Training Solutions, LLC and teaching paralegals in Emory University’s Paralegal Program. In addition to teaching at Emory University, Cicely has taught at Clayton State University in Atlanta, Georgia and online for Kaplan University in Florida. Cicely’s teaching background coupled with her legal training make her uniquely qualified to speak to diverse audiences about complex topics.
Cicely is a member of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, Georgia Association of Paralegals, and the Georgia State Bar’s Women & Minorities in the Profession Committee. Cicely is also on the Board of Directors for Georgia Legal Services Program. She is a trained and registered mediator for the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution and occasionally serves as a Guardian Ad Litem in child custody cases. Cicely is a cum laude graduate of both Spelman College and Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Cicely balances all of the above with her role as wife to husband, Bryan and mother to her daughter, Skylar.
