The first four years of Dons formal education started in a one-room country school house. He graduated from Momence H.S, Momence, Illinois in 1957, Immediately after graduation he enlisted in the US Army for three years. Completing his service time he enrolled at Marquette University in 1960. With the birth of his first daughter he had to become a part-time student. He worked at a gas station, drove a Coca-Cola route truck, sold cars, worked at Caterpillar plant, worked as a security guard, worked in a foundry plant, and became a radio announcer. After six years he had completed only half of the credits needed to graduate. He transferred to Illinois State University and with the return of the G.I. Bill, Don finished his last two years of college in just 18 months Now with two daughters he finally graduated after eight years. He then moved to Houston, Texas. He worked in the automotive after market field as a salesman most of his life. He even preformed stand up comedy and entertained as the clown Mr. Donaldo.
