"Human nature, if it is healthy, demands excitement. And if it does not find its excitement in the right way, it will find it in the wrong..." Oswald Chambers
By Dwight Edwards
The reality is...we are all adrenaline junkies in varying degrees. None of us is born into this world craving boredom and unrelieved sameness. There is within every human spirit a longing for wings, a craving to soar above the rooftops of mediocrity and ordinariness. Oswald Chambers is exactly right, "Human nature, if it is healthy demands excitement..."
This longing, this craving, is one of the great gifts God has implanted within every human soul. Its design is to save us from settling for a mundane, dare free, thoroughly uneventful life. We need to be sure however, that we are going in the right direction to find our adventure.
I read this on the back of a Starbucks cup the other day and thought it beautifully demonstrated where adventure is best found. It is written by Maria Fadiman, a geographer, ethno-botanist, and National Geographic Emerging Explorer:
"I used to think that going to the jungle made my life an adventure. However, after years of unusual work in exotic places, I realize that it is not how far off I go or how deep into the forest I walk that gives my life meaning. I see that living life fully is what makes life - anyone's life, no matter where they do or do not go."
What an important reminder! It's not forays into the jungle which bring the most important adventure to a person's life. It's having the courage to "live life fully" and go for broke in fulfilling the unique design and purpose each of us is given. No jungle can match that adventure!
