Losing someone we love can be one of the most challenging stressors we face as human beings.

There are 3 types of contractions our muscles make: Concentric, Eccentric and Isometric. While the first two require a bit of room, Isometric training does not!  I spend many hours a day and too many hours a week in my car so I know first hand how sluggish we can all feel sitting on our butts all day.   "Are "Carbs" bad for me?"   No!   So what's the hype?????

Fact: Carbohydrates are the most important macronutrient.   Your body uses carbohydrates as energy to fuel you like the gas in your car.

Fiction: Eating bread or grains will make you fat.

Why do we believe this? Because most of the pastas, grains and breads we eat are high in calories and low in nutrients.  Sugar is a carb... so if you are eating lots of sugar, you may gain weight because you are having too many empty calories that get stored as fat instead of used as energy. Athletic supplements for runners or competitors usually contain mostly sugar-- because these folks need energy FAST during their competitions.  We, as the general population, do NOT need fast energy because we SIT most of the time.  Leave the Gatorade and Power Bar "Goo" for the marathons WHEN they are running. I would even say cut back on the protein bars too since they also contain a lot of sugar and add up to a lot of extra calories each week.

How many times a week do I meet with new clients over or close to 50 who workout and see NO RESULTS???  Many, many times! 

 

"Why can't I lose weight after menopause even though I walk on the treadmill 7 days a week for 30 min? "  

 

Your body weight is a total mass number which includes many components (skin, organs, blood, hair, muscle, fat, bone, etc).  When you lose weight, you can lose fat, water or muscle. When you see you have lost a couple of pounds-do you know what you have lost?  You want to lose fat since you need both muscle and water.

 

 Muscle uses energy and having more of it increases your metabolism. In fact, the amount of muscle you have is the largest component of what determines the speed of your metabolism!  2 people both 125 pounds and 5'5 will burn calories differently based on their composition.  Subject #1 is 20% body fat and Subject #2 is 38% body fat.  That could mean that Subject #1 may be burning up to 500 more calories each day at rest even though they weight the same!

 

 During and after menopause, women lose hormones which decreases the ability to hold on to muscle.  Men with aging also lose hormones.  If your diet has not changed while your metabolism is slowing down, then you are gaining weight based on your body changing.  Doing merely cardio is only burning calories while you work out.  But of course there is also efficiency in cardio.  Are you working hard enough?  Do you know how hard you should be working?  I find that most men and women over 50 walk outside or on the treadmill at a pace which is too easy for them.  They think it is cardio because they sweat but because they are good at it, the use of that time is wasted since the intensity level is not high enough to burn more calories or to force the body to change.  I suggest using a heart rate monitor to gauge where you are an learn about where you should be.

 

 Most forms of cardio do not increase your resting metabolism as well therefore you only burn more when you move more. If you want long term weight loss, spend more time building muscle to increase your metabolism instead of having to decrease your daily diet. We all need muscle to move and protect our joints from injury, build bone, keep metabolism high to ward off weight gain and to look and feel our best.
