Some people believe that business is about the bottom line ... money.  But the real purpose, goal and pursuit of business is the creation of ongoing relationships with ideal customers, clients who continue to pay for the services you provide, for weeks, months, years and even for life.

How do you, as a business developer, locate such ideal clients and convince them to choose your services, over and over again, despite any attractive offers from your competitors?

In my last post, I described how life reflects back to us what we believe about our worthiness and “enoughness” and I said that watching for patterns is a great way to recognize these reflections. I recently identified a pattern in my own life and connected it to a painful belief that held me hostage for most of my 38 years ~ not any more!

About a month ago, I moved into an idyllic 1930s cottage right along the river and Missoula’s beautiful river’s edge bike path. I was so happy to be in a house again, especially one with so much charm. What could be wrong with that? Plenty!

The floors creak more than you might imagine, and there is a renter in the basement. During my first few weeks in the house, I felt terrible about walking around in the morning, knowing that my neighbor might be woken up by my movements. While I was doing everything I could think of not to disturb her, she slammed her door every time she went in or out and she blasted

It was interesting last night when we arrived at the party. Everyone was engaged with someone else and no one greeted us. I felt awkward and went into my judgments about the hostess.

So Annie and I grabbed a chair and talked to each other. We could have stayed home I thought to myself. This went on for about ten or fifteen minutes and finally someone broke off their conversation and the subject of mountain biking came up…I felt like a made a connection and then it was time for the food. We all got up and stood around the table lighting candles and blessing the food. That felt good and we ate. I hadn’t done that for a while.

In the chair next to me, Art, who I had played music with six months before at this same house sat down. After a while our conversation extended to playing music.

How often have all of us heard the words be yourself and everything will work out. Something frequently stops us from being ourselves on jobs. What is it?

I have theory. So many of us have to move for jobs so we take out long term leases. So many of us move for jobs that we end up isolated in a community where our company doubles as both a source of friends and a source of income.

That leaves all too many us trembling whenever speaking out could result in a loss of a job. Minds race ahead vividly imagining what it would be like to be unemployed, isolated and unwanted. Eyes end up tilted downwards. Hands go down. Words end up uttered hurriedly in whispers. FEAR IS CATCHING AND IT RESONATES.

Companies and team suffer because of fear. The sad truth is that to be successful on a job someone has to show the courage to risk losing one.

I am the victim of a hovering parent. At times, it seems that almost nothing I do is right according to my mother. My decision-making is questioned in regards to my parenting skills, my relationships and even how I keep my home. She means well but she can be a bit overbearing at times. I used to get rather frustrated and resentful of her constant nitpicking but through continual personal development, I have learned how to deal with her. Our relationship has drastically improved since I have changed the way I respond to her. Since I know I am not alone, I thought I would share how I manage her helicopter parenting.

The first thing I did was to realize that she has good intentions. From the time we are conceived our parents begin to map out our lives. They dream about what we will look like, how we will act, what we will be when we grow up, who we will marry, where we will live and how many children we will have.
