"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
by Dwight Edwards
One of the most difficult challenges in life comes directly from ourselves. It is that of having enough courage to remain doggedly true to our own individuality. To refuse to play a part different than the one we were made for, to overcome the myriad of temptations to quietly and tamely exist rather than to live, to renounce the yearning in all of us for wholesale approval; these are no small victories in a world where most are satisfied to sacrifice their individuality on the altar of practicality and convenience.
Oscar Wilde was exactly right, "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." You are created, gifted, and impassioned with the ability to do something uniquely well. There is a song only you can sing. A niche only you can fill. A part only you can play in the unfolding of this universe. Don't try to play someone else's hand. Bring all your gifts, bring all your talents, bring all your personality, bring all your passion to the card table of life and have the courage to lay them all out for everyone to see.
And whether things work out the way you hope for or not, a far more important issue will have been settled. You will have had the courage to be yourself, to play your part, to follow your star. And no one can do more than that!
