The 5 Unforgivable Sins of Training!

Sad but true: most of us have sat through some really horrible training programs and seminars: (1) where the slideshow was all text and no images, and (2) lots of tiny text on each slide!  Or (3) where the trainer didn’t speak up and droned on lifelessly. Or (4) where the material was either too complicated or too simplistic for the audience. Or perhaps worst of all, (5) where the trainer merely read the slides out loud one after another.  Ugh!

I call these the 5 Unforgivable Sins of Training. You probably have more to add to this sorry list!

My first experience with the 5 Unforgivable Sins occured when I was in college – in an elective course on social statistics.  It was obvious the professor was brilliant; he knew his topic – he was an expert and published author on it. But he couldn’t teach his way out of a paper bag; droned on and on about freakin’ statistics!!  I put up with his style – or lack thereof – for two weeks and then I’ll admit, I gave up and dropped the class.
I vowed then and there, that if I ever got the opportunity to teach or be a trainer or speaker, that I would do everything I could to bring even the dullest of topics to life for my audience; to have them walking out thinking “wow, that was really interesting,” and “Much better than I thought it would be,” and “I really learned something, and I enjoyed myself to boot.”

So, twenty seven years later, that’s what I do now – try my best to grab my audience and hold ‘em.  Now, I talk about things that many people may find boring i.e. diversity, sexual harassment prevention, leadership, teamwork. But I’m totally committed to engaging with my audience; to keep my energy really high; to make eye contact; to teach the program interactively at their level; to ask them what they think, get them involved, open up a lively discussion.  Most of all I do my very best to engage their hearts and their minds in the topic as completely as possible.

I’d like to think that after 25 years of practice and over 2,500 separate programs under my belt, I’ve gotten pretty good at it: most of participants’ evaluations seem to bear this out.  Still, I’m not about to rest on my laurels; I’ll always remember the 5 Unforgiveable Sins of Training and do whatever I can to avoid sinning!
