Sad but true: most of us have sat through some really horrible training programs and seminars: (1) where the slideshow was all text and no images, and (2) lots of tiny text on each slide! Or (3) where the trainer didn’t speak up and droned on lifelessly. Or (4) where the material was either too complicated or too simplistic for the audience. Or perhaps worst of all, (5) where the trainer merely read the slides out loud one after another. Ugh!
I call these the 5 Unforgivable Sins of Training. You probably have more to add to this sorry list!
So, twenty seven years later, that’s what I do now – try my best to grab my audience and hold ‘em. Now, I talk about things that many people may find boring i.e. diversity, sexual harassment prevention, leadership, teamwork. But I’m totally committed to engaging with my audience; to keep my energy really high; to make eye contact; to teach the program interactively at their level; to ask them what they think, get them involved, open up a lively discussion. Most of all I do my very best to engage their hearts and their minds in the topic as completely as possible.
I’d like to think that after 25 years of practice and over 2,500 separate programs under my belt, I’ve gotten pretty good at it: most of participants’ evaluations seem to bear this out. Still, I’m not about to rest on my laurels; I’ll always remember the 5 Unforgiveable Sins of Training and do whatever I can to avoid sinning!
